While racking equipment is a term used in the wine making industry, equipment racking is a far different thing – usually referring to the storage of equipment varying from the likes of retail items to sporting goods and even warehouse goods. While most of us never cast a second glance at the actual racking upon which the item we wish to purchase is resting upon, this highly specialised product is a useful tool in modern day storage and display areas. Used in a number of different industries, such as industry, business or archiving, terms such as longspan, stainless steel and chrome are commonplace, as are the words pallet, bar and sheet, though these last terms are not applicable for this particular piece. The beams have a stepped profile which will hold a timber or metal deck in place without the need for additional supports. Stainless steel is defined as a steel alloy with a minimum of 11.5% chromium content by mass. Stainless steel does not stain, corrode or rust as easily as ordinary steel (it "stains less"), but it is not stain-proof. It is also called corrosion resistant steel when the alloy type and grade are not detailed, particularly in the aviation industry. There are different grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment to which the material will be subjected in its lifetime. Stainless steel differs from carbon steel by amount of chromium present. Carbon steel rusts when exposed to air and moisture. This iron oxide film is active and accelerates corrosion by forming more iron oxide. Stainless steels have sufficient amount of chromium present so that a passive film of chromium oxide forms which prevents further corrosion.
Chrome plating, on the other hand, is a technique of electroplating a thin layer of chromium onto a metal object. The chromed layer can be decorative, or it may help provide corrosion resistance. As discussed earlier, equipment racking is the ideal storage solution in retail environments, and one would only have to look at the tyre trade or garment manufacturers to understand that sheer volume and quantities require sufficient height, floor space and stackability to allow for a fast and easy throughflow of products for sale. This can be achieved by the installation of equipment racking, though there are still some specialist requirements that necessitate the design of individual components to fit a specialised piece of equipment, though this can almost be referred to as customised equipment racking.
